This is an exciting project that LouAnne has offered to work on. We would like to collect your old 2009 calendars. The thick, colorful papers can be used to create beads by women in Uganda. Contact LouAnne for more information, and be sure to drop off your calendars next time you're at the gallery.

Please save your old 2009 calendars, especially the colorful ones for the women in Uganda who make beads out of the paper & create jewelry to sell. These are women in the Refugee camps & the Paper to Pearls project is helping them to become self-sustaining.

My sister in Virginia Beach uses the beads in some of her designs & they blend very well with the glass beads as well as genuine stone beads. I like the mixed look better than what you see on their web site, so any of you that do bead work might be interested in incorporating them in your designs. I do have some sample beads on hand ( if I can just find them!). My sister is supposed to be sending me some more once she gets some in.
I see from their web site that the bag of beads is not available at this time...don't really know why. I do know that they have been having some trouble getting enough calendars & shipping costs has been an issue, as well as safe delivery. The woman in Alexandria that runs the project usually takes them with her when she travels there.
I will put a basket in the Gallery for drop-offs so please tell your friends. Thanks for your consideration in participating in this project.
